Julia Cesare was an independent
feature length film that I, along with my then
working partner, produced under the auspices of our
company, the now defunct Wilvin Media. Based on
William Shakespeare's Julius Ceasar, Cesare was an
updated version. I changed the setting and concept
but not the language. Julius became Julia, a gender
conversion, along with several other characters.
The setting was modern corporate Rome and Julia is
killed by Brutus to stop her takeover. The plot and
dialogue remained the same.
The film was shot on an ultra low budget.
I handled scripting, directing, and editing, while
others dealt with lighting, sound, and
cinematography. The results was, admittedly, a mixed
bag. However, many a valuable lesson was learned.
Most notably, as a starting project, choose wisely. Cesare was a bit overwhelming to begin upon.
Ambition is a double edge sword offering amazing
success and absolute disaster at the flick of the
wrist. A large cast, a complicated story, and a
small budget do not often mix well. Although
lighting and camera work were acceptable, the sound
issues were daunting for us, the inexperienced. Ultimately the
project
collapsed and having so little budget
(and quite frankly, not having any idea how to fix
the problems), post-production resolutions were out
of the realm of possibility. The result was a
clever, well intention film with some great acting,
pretty good direction and editing, fair shot and
lighting quality, and poor sound. The script,
however, was fantastic. Thank you Billy S.
